I’ve been spending lots of time wandering New York City. Usually, I have no destination in mind; I like to walk and look, stop and sketch, and remember to look up. When I returned home the other day, I joined a Zoom session with
and , working on writing prompts and how they can relate to drawing (at least how that’s how I interpreted it) There was a lot of great content, but the first one I am digging onto is exploring why I am so drawn to a particular color. Today I’m thinking about chartreuse and olive. (this family of color). Here are a few versions of olive/chartreuse with one other color. from left: Beryl Green, Rose, Cobalt, Yellow-Orange
When my son was growing up, he called this color vomit; I always laughed because I don’t see it that way! I can understand where he was coming from, but I see so much more than that. In my mind, It’s the color of my beloved fresh green tea, once brewed. It’s freshly pressed olive oil, creamy and translucent; It’s the grass in the distance with the sun shining brightly; It’s the tall beach grasses blowing in a breeze. I love to paint with it because it neutralizes other brighter colors but is still a color. I wear it to brighten up an all-black outfit. I love thinking about the why of it and now I want to think about other colors in the same way; it creates a clear story for my choice. What is your favorite color?
New Zoom Class: December 15th 1-3 EST Fun Holiday Theme
and I are teaching a new Zoom Class. It will be a bit different as I will do a 15-minute demo on using gouache and acrylagouache with a touch of color mixing. Even if you use a different medium for class or have experience with gouache this will be an interesting exercise. We will then demo some fun holiday-themed art that could be used on cards or just made in your sketchbook for fun. This is a Donation-only class; all levels are very welcome, and a portion of our proceeds will go to local food banks.
Join us for some Holiday Cheer!
See you soon, Enjoy your December
xxJennifer
It was so wonderful to meet you! <3
Love what you wrote about chartreuse! Funny I was teaching Theo some of the more obscure names of colors, and he only knew a few. Like ecru, taupe, celadon, etc... He had no idea what chartreuse was.
